Most competitive medical schools

The average acceptance rate in fall 2014 for all 117 medical schools ranked by U.S. News & World Report was 7.1 percent. However, some schools are much tougher to get into: The average acceptance rate of the 10 medical schools that accepted the lowest percentage of applicants last fall was just 2.7 percent.

The following 10 medical schools all accepted a smaller percentage of applicants than Harvard University, which admitted 3.5 percent of applicants. Here is how the 10 medical schools with the strictest admission policies in the nation stacked up in fall 2014, as presented by U.S. News & World Report.

1. Morehouse School of Medicine (Atlanta) — 1.6 percent acceptance rate           
2. Mayo Medical School (Rochester, Minn.) — 2 percent
3. Stanford (Calif.) School of Medicine — 2.4 percent       
4. Georgetown University School of Medicine (Washington, D.C.) — 2.7 percent
5. Brown University Alpert Medical School (Providence, R.I.) — 2.9 percent       
6. George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences (Washington, D.C.) — 2.9 percent     
7. Wake Forest University School of Medicine (Winston-Salem, N.C.) — 2.9 percent      
8. Howard University College of Medicine (Washington, D.C.) — 3.1 percent     
9. UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine (Los Angeles) — 3.2 percent
10. Duke University School of Medicine (Durham, N.C.) — 3.3 percent
