Hospitals Buying Physician Practices: 12 Recent Transactions

The following transactions or developments between hospitals and physician groups took place within the past two months, beginning with the most recent.

1. Advocate Medical Group Acquires Heart Institute for Children

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Advocate Medical Group, the physician arm of Advocate Health Care, has acquired the Oak Lawn, Ill.-based Heart Institute for Children. The heart institute, which will add 13 pediatric cardiologists to Advocate's medical group, will be renamed Advocate Heart Institute for Children.  

2. Memorial Hermann Acquires South Texas Medical Clinics
Houston-based Memorial Hermann Healthcare System announced it acquired South Texas Medical Clinics, a multispecialty physician group based in Wharton. The physician group spans three counties southwest of Houston and has a staff of 31 full-time physicians, 11 contract physicians and 13 physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

3. Baptist Health in Jacksonville Adds Two Cardiology Groups
Two cardiology groups in Jacksonville, Fla. — Jacksonville Heart Center and the Southern Heart Group — have joined Baptist Health in Jacksonville and will form a specialty service known as Baptist Heart Specialists. Baptist Heart Specialists will become part of the team at the Baptist Heart Hospital.

4. Lourdes Health System to Partner With Franklin Cardiovascular
Camden, N.J.-based Lourdes Health System announced it is partnering with Sewell, N.J.-based Franklin Cardiovascular.

5. Moundview Memorial Hospital, Roche-A-Cri Clinic in Wisconsin to Merge
Two Friendship, Wisc.-based providers — Moundview Memorial Hospital & Clinics and Roche-A-Cri Clinic — have announced plans to merge, effective in July. Roche-A-Cri Clinic is a physician-owned clinic specializing in general medicine, while Moundview is a community hospital with primary care clinics.

6. St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth Acquires Northland OB-GYN
Duluth, Minn.-based St. Luke's Hospital System has acquired a Duluth specialty clinic, Northland OB-GYN. Northland clinic has eight full-time physicians and 35 more employees.

7. Munroe Regional Medical Center Partners With Ocala Surgical Associates
Ocala, Fla.-based Munroe Regional Medical Center will bring on Ocala Surgical Associates, making the four surgeon associates employees of the hospital. Under the deal, Munroe will lease Ocala Surgical Associates' current clinic location.

8. South Peninsula Hospital in Alaska Purchases Physician-Owned Homer Medical Clinic
Homer, Alaska-based South Peninsula Hospital will purchase the physician-owned Homer Medical Clinic. South Peninsula Hospital will lease the clinic's buildings and purchase its office equipment; the clinic will assume the name South Peninsula Hospital Homer Medical Center. The deal is expected to be finalized July 1.

9. Mercy Regional in Colorado Acquires Durango Cancer Center, Southwest Oncology
Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, Colo., acquired medical oncology practice Southwest Oncology and radiation oncology practice Durango Cancer Center. The acquisition took effect May 1 and more than 30 physicians and staff members became employees of Mercy Medical Center.

10. Advocate Medical Center Partners With Medical Group For Pediatric Clinic
A partnership between Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Ill, part of Oakbrook, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care, and Advocate Medical Group will bring a pediatric sub-specialist physician clinic to Advocate Condell.

11. Sisters of Mercy in Missouri May Merge With Multispecialty Physician Group
Sisters of Mercy Health System, a 31-hospital system based in Chesterfield, Mo., and Patients First, a Washington, Mo.-based multispecialty physician group, announced exclusive negotiations in April, working toward a merger.

12. Highmark's Integrated Delivery System Welcomes First Orthopedic Group
Orthopedic Associates of Pittsburgh affiliated with Highmark's Integrated Delivery System as five OAPGH surgeons began working as Highmark providers on April 1. They focus on knee, foot, ankle, hip, shoulder and upper extremity care, as well as joint replacement and sports medicine. OAPGH is the first orthopedic group to join Highmark's Integrated Delivery System.
