Dr. Mellinkoff was 96. The cause of death was congestive heart failure.
Dr. Mellinkoff took over the deanship in 1962 and retired in 1986. During his 24-year tenure, he transformed the medical school, which was hardly 10 years old when he began his role. Under his leadership, the David Geffen School of Medicine created a cancer center and organ transplant programs; greatly enlarged its faculty and student body; and increased its budget from $15 million to more than $180 million.
