ER patient threatens to harm himself, staff with knife at Chicago hospital

A 31-year-old patient threatened to harm himself with a knife and made demands of staff at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Ill., Saturday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Winfield police reportedly responded to the hospital just after 2:30 p.m. Saturday following reports of an unidentified patient armed with a knife in the hospital's ER.

The police said in a news release officers were able to negotiate with the patient and were successfully able to convince him to relinquish his weapon without the use of force, the report states. The incident reportedly lasted about 30 minutes.

The patient was initially admitted to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. A spokesperson for Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage said no other patients or staff were harmed or involved and that the patient is "being evaluated," the Chicago Tribune reports.
