Drexel University, based in Philadelphia, and Tower Health, based in West Reading, Pa., signed a letter of intent to merge their physician groups, which would create a combined group of approximately 735 physicians. The move would bring the organizations even closer together, expanding their clinical footprints and increasing options for medical student clinical rotations, according to the report.
Drexel University’s main clinical teaching location in Philadelphia, Hahnemann University Hospital, has faced significant financial challenges and is struggling to stay open.
Drexel and Tower have an existing 20-year academic affiliation and are collaborating to open a four-year medical school near Tower Health’s flagship facility, West Reading Hospital.
