CMS Redistributes 1,354 Medicare Residency Positions

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has redistributed approximately 1,354 Medicare residency positions, according to an AHA News Now report.

CMS allocated 628 indirect medical education and 726 direct graduate medical education positions to 58 qualifying hospitals out of 267 hospitals that were not training up to their residency caps.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act slashed full-time equivalent resident caps for certain hospitals, authorizing the redistribution of resident positions to other hospitals.

Under the PPACA redistribution formula, 70 percent of positions were allocated to 39 hospitals in states with low resident-to-population rations. Thirty percent were allocated to 19 hospitals in rural areas, or areas that faced a shortage of health professionals.
