Clinton Memorial Hospital to Nix Family Medicine Residency Program

Wilmington, Ohio-based Clinton Memorial Hospital will end its family medicine residency program June 30, 2014, despite the nation's looming primary care shortage.

CMH had been aligned with the University of Cincinnati for its residency program. According to a Dayton Business Journal report, there are currently 12 residents and five faculty members in the program.

"The trend nationally is for residency programs to be based in larger metro areas," Mark Dooley, the hospital's president and CEO, said in the hospital news release. "We are faced with declining reimbursement on all fronts and think it best that we not continue as a teaching hospital in order to focus our energies on healthcare services vitally needed in [our] community."

There was no word on where the current residents would be transferred, but the hospital will help transition the employees who work at the Family Health Center where residents and faculty treated patients, according to the news release.
