AAFP: Top 10 medical schools for family medicine 2017

The American Academy of Family Physicians highlighted the top 20 allopathic and osteopathic medical schools for 2017 that have produced the highest number of physicians who went into family medicine residency programs.

The figures are based on a three-year average for medical students who graduated in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Schools that graduated a substantial number of family medicine physicians maintained several characteristics, including strong faculty involvement in medical school committees and leadership, educational opportunities highlighting the importance of family medicine, and financial support to minimize the impact of student debt, among other attributes.

Here are the top 10 allopathic medical schools and the percentage of graduates who entered into family medicine residency programs from those schools for 2017.

1. The University of New Mexico School of Medicine (Albuquerque) — 20.7 percent
2. East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine (Greenville, N.C.) — 19.6 percent
3. University of Minnesota Medical School (Minneapolis) — 18.9 percent
4. The University of Kansas School of Medicine (Kansas City) — 18.9 percent
5. The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville (Columbia) — 18.4 percent
6. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (Little Rock) — 18.1 percent
7. University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine (Vermillion) — 17.8 percent
8. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine (Lubbock) — 17.7 percent
9. University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine — 17.7 percent
10. OHSU School of Medicine (Portland, Ore.) — 17.0 percent
