4 ways to fight physician burnout

Physician burnout is one of the most pressing issues facing the medical community, but Robert P. Smith, MD, associate dean for graduate medical education at Boca Raton-based Florida Atlantic University's Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, has some tips to avoid this stress.

Below are four of Dr. Smith's biggest suggestions to physicians for fighting burnout, according to Healio.

  1. Get a good night's sleep. It may sound like a fairly obvious strategy, but few people understand just how vital a night of sound, deep sleep is to function well the next day.
  2. Take short breaks when needed. Pausing is a good way to regroup during the day and regain some energy.
  3. Singing and laughing have real effects on a person's energy levels and outlook, so don't be afraid to belt a tune in the car on the way to work or during one of your short breaks.
  4. Keep up your hobbies, which are a good way to make sure time away from work is spent on other activities instead of thinking about tomorrow's tasks.
