22-year-old medical school student stabbed to death with 10-inch hunting knife in Massachusetts public library

A 23-year-old Massachusetts man was arraigned Feb. 26 and pleaded not guilty to one charge of armed assault with intent to murder and one count of murder for the death of a 22-year-old medical student Feb. 24, according to MassLive.

Here are six things to know about the case.

1. Police arrived at Winchester (Mass.) Public Library shortly after 10:30 a.m. Feb. 24 following reports of an alleged assault, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office. Investigators discovered 22-year-old Deane "Kenny" Stryker and an unidentified 77-year-old man, both suffering from stab wounds, and transported them to nearby area hospitals. A coroner confirmed Ms. Stryker died from injuries sustained during the incident, while the elderly man was released from the hospital as of Feb. 26, according to a second update by the Middlesex district attorney's office.

2. Police arrested Jeffrey Yao, 23, in connection with the assault. Investigators said Mr. Yao approached Ms. Stryker, unprovoked, and proceeded to stab her multiple times in the head and torso with a 10-inch hunting knife. Mr. Yao injured the elderly man as he attempted to intervene, according to the Middlesex district attorney's office.

3. MassLive reports Mr. Yao and Ms. Stryker both attended Winchester High School, but it is unclear if they knew each other during that time period.

4. Ms. Stryker was a first-year medical student at Biddeford, Maine-based University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine prior to her death.

5. Several of Mr. Yao's neighbors told the Boston Herald he had become increasingly violent in recent months, and claimed to have shared their concerns with police.

6. A judge Feb. 26 ordered Mr. Yao be held without bail, according to the report. A second hearing on the case will take place April 11, according to the update from the Middlesex district attorney's office.
