13 universities team up to enhance professionalism in medical education

Thirteen medical schools teamed up to teach future healthcare providers about the importance of medical professionalism, DrexelNow reports.

According to the American Board of Medical Specialties, "medical professionalism" encompses the ethical beliefs and the shared competency standards medical professionals should aim to adhere to. Central to those values are a focus on maintaining an ethical value system, the knowledge and skills necessary for good medical practice and the interpersonal skills necessary to work with patients and colleagues.

The 13 medical schools, including Philadelphia-based Drexel University College of Medicine and Pittsburgh-based Perelman School of Medicine University of Pennsylvania, aim to advance the ideals of medical professionalism through the use of ProfessionalFormation.org, an online resource created by the Drexel University College of Medicine to teach students the content and skills of professionalism.

The Drexel University College of Medicine recently received grant funding from The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation to continue development of the online tool.
