With BCRA failure, Senate Dems call for bipartisan process

Senate Democrats are calling for bipartisan efforts to help improve the ACA after two more Republican senators announced Monday that they won’t vote to debate the BCRA, effectively killing the bill, according to The Hill.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., tweeted that the failure of the bill to gain support from its own party was “proof positive” of its fundamental flaws.

“Rather than repeating the same failed, partisan process yet again, Republicans should start from scratch and work with Democrats on a bill that lowers premiums, provides long term stability to the markets and improves our health care system,” Mr. Schumer said in a statement.

However, Senate Democrats may not actually have the unified position that party leadership desires. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has long been a supporter of a single-payer healthcare system and has said publicly that, should GOP efforts stall, Democrats should not reconcile with Republicans but instead pursue a more liberal healthcare agenda.
