West Penn Allegheny Health System executive dies at 56

Dawn Marie Gideon, a top executive with the Pittsburgh-based West Penn Allegheny Health System, died June 4 of breast cancer, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She was 56.

During her career, Ms. Gideon worked at the former Forbes Health System, eventually being named CEO in 1990. In 1997, the forerunner to West Penn acquired Forbes and Ms. Gideon was named senior vice president for strategic planning at Allegheny University Hospitals.

In 1999, she opened her own consulting business to aid financially struggling healthcare facilities. She later worked as managing director of Huron Consulting, and returned to West Penn Allegheny Health System to serve as chief of hospital operations. In 2010, she rejoined Huron.

“She absolutely loved what she did,” Ms. Gideon’s husband Kevin Altomari told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
