WellStar cuts 49 employees

Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health System cut 49 employees from its 20,000-person workforce, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

The cuts include communications division positions and 16 part-time or as-needed roles, according to the report. They did not affect physicians, nurses or other direct patient care positions.

WellStar spokesperson Keith Bowermaster attributed the move to a "corporate restructure."

"Over the past two days, WellStar initiated a corporate restructure to better align with our strategic plan and improve operational efficiencies," he said in a statement to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. "The impacted team members are all in nondirect patient care roles and we anticipate these staffing changes are all that is required for the foreseeable future. WellStar remains a strong, fiscally-sound provider of healthcare services and these changes will enhance our abilities to improve the health and well-being of the individuals and communities we serve."

According to the report, employees affected by the cuts are eligible for rehire at WellStar.
