Walmart hires former senior Humana exec to lead healthcare business

Walmart tapped Humana’s former vice president of innovation Sean Slovenski to run its healthcare and wellness unit, according to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg.

Here are four things to know about the appointment:

1. The move comes months after The Wall Street Journal reported the retail giant and health insurer were in preliminary talks to develop a closer partnership, with one possibility being Walmart acquiring Humana.

2. Mr. Slovenski will serve as senior vice president of health and wellness at Walmart, according to the July 12 memo. He assumes the role Aug. 1.

3. Mr. Slovenski joins Walmart from Healthways, a part of digital health firm Sharecare, according to Bloomberg. He was president of the population health business at Healthways. Walmart recently partnered with Sharecare to increase its employees’ access to health resources.

4. Mr. Slovenski spent three years at Humana.
