Uncompensated care at 12 hospitals & health systems across the US

Uncompensated can cost hospitals and health systems millions every year.

However, the percentage of operating costs spent on uncompensated care is decreasing in some states. The ACA cut hospital uncompensated care spending by 21 percent, according to the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation for HHS and reported by HFMA.

Uncompensated care in Medicaid expansion states fell from 4.1 percentage points of operating costs to 3.1 percentage points. At the same time, uncompensated care in non-expansion states continued along the existing trend, hovering at about 5.7 percentage points of hospitals' operating costs.

Becker’s Hospital Review gathered data on uncompensated care reported by 12 hospitals and health systems for the 2015 calendar year, unless otherwise indicated. These hospitals and health systems were selected as providers that deliver care in different regions across the country and have information about uncompensated care publicly available online.
