The reductions will be made through a combination of layoffs at its flagship hospital, UMass Memorial Medical Center, and by selling divisions that provide health services.
The first phase of the cuts will occur when 150 positions are restructured at the medical center, which employs 10,000 people. No physicians will be laid off, according to the report, but positions eliminated will affect a range of roles, including managers and union employees.
The system is also planning to sell its home health division, which employs 150 people, and its lab services division, which employs another 400-600 people. Many of these employees might be retained by the eventual buyers, but will no longer work for UMass.
The layoffs are driven by the system’s financial problems. The system has seen a decline of 6 percent in patient discharges in the last three months of 2011, and a drop in imaging tests of more than 7 percent, according to the report.
