Trump administration reconsiders ending 'medical deferred action' for immigrants

The New York Times reports that the Trump administration is reconsidering its decision to end renewals of medical deferred action status, which allows immigrants with serious and life-threatening illnesses to legally stay in the U.S. while they receive medical treatment.

Medical deferred action status is granted for two years at a time, and families can reapply for renewal. In August, some families received letters that they could not renew their status and must leave the country within 33 days or face deportation.

An anonymous official from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services office told The New York Times that the administration is reviewing a "very limited version of deferred action." A statement from USCIS said it will process cases that were pending as of Aug. 7, when it originally ended the program, according to the report.
