Top 5 Preferred Work Environments for Nurses

Most nurses prefer working in non-surgical hospitals and with physicians and nurse practitioners, according to Vital Signs 2012, a national nursing attitudes and outlook report by Jackson Healthcare, a healthcare staffing company.

The findings of the report are based on a survey for nurses conducted online from October to November 2012. The 969 respondents were self-selected.

Forty-three percent of the respondents preferred working with physicians and 40 percent preferred working with nurse practitioners, while only 7 percent preferred working with physician assistants.

Most preferred work environments for nurses, according to the survey, are as follows:

•    Hospital (non-surgical, non-emergency) — 35 percent
•    Outpatient clinic —13 percent
•    Emergency department — 11 percent
•    Specialized outpatient practice — 8 percent
•    Hospital surgery department — 6 percent
