Physicians Care Surgical Hospital in Royersford, Penn., opened with 16 physicians on Monday, making it the region’s second physician-owned medical center, according to a Philadelphia Business Journal report.

The hospital will be the last physician-owned facility to open in Pennsylvania and one of the last in the country due to the ban on new physician-owned hospitals under healthcare reform, which goes into effect on Jan. 1.

The physician-owned hospital was organized by an orthopedic surgeon and an ear, nose and throat specialist who were dissatisfied with recent trends in hospital care. To include physicians who don’t perform outpatient surgery, they decided to open a hospital rather than an ASC.

The 12-bed hospital is being managed by Nueterra Healthcare of Leadwood, Kan., which manages 85 independent or joint venture healthcare facilities.
