LICH is part of State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. SUNY officials have voted twice to close the Brooklyn-based hospital due to large financial losses. New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released an audit in January that found SUNY Downstate would be insolvent by this May, and LICH has been a primary factor in SUNY Downstate’s financial woes, losing hundreds of millions of dollars due to low occupancy.
According to the Post, officials from Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center and North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Great Neck, N.Y., have approached the LICH medical about taking over the hospital. The hospital’s medical staff is also asking for more financial information on LICH.
SUNY Downstate representatives told the Post that “if there was a legitimate interested buyer for LICH, SUNY Downstate would be delighted” but did not confirm if either Hackensack or North Shore-LIJ were potential suitors. The Post did not include comments from either system.
