Researchers studied Medicare beneficiaries who had an ischemic stroke in 2004. They found that patients with aphasia had longer length of stays, higher morbidity and greater mortality than those without aphasia. Aphasia thus adds to the cost of stroke care beyond caring for the stroke alone, the authors said.
