Cognitive task analysis can help train surgery residents on laparoscopic appendectomy by separating the major operative steps and decision points, according to a study in the American Journal of Surgery.

Researchers interviewed surgeons who were experts in laparoscopic appendectomy using the critical decision method-based CTA methodology. The surgeons identified 24 operative steps and 27 decision points involved in the surgery. They were more likely to identify operative steps as key teaching points for junior residents and decision points as key teaching points for senior residents.

The authors suggested that using CTA to separate the primary operative steps and decision points can help guide resident level-appropriate training.
