Roughly two weeks ago, hospital officials laid off 29 employees, attributing the measure to burdensome amounts of charity care. Calhoun Memorial Hospital CEO Earl Whiteley told the Albany Herald the 25-bed, county-owned hospital provided $1.8 million in charity care in 2012 alone.
The hospital, which sits in a county with an unemployment rate of 18 percent, will sell off its equipment and assets over the next two to four months.
“It’s a sad day for the community,” Mr. Whiteley said in the report. “We were a small hospital in a small community, and we were the largest economic development left. It’s just a sign of the times.”
