In this special Speaker Series, Becker's Healthcare caught up with Wendy Roach, director of patient access at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Ill.

Ms. Roach will speak during the Becker's Hospital Review 4th Annual Health IT + Revenue Cycle Conference on "Developing your Plan for Effective Leadership" at  2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19. Learn more about the event and register to attend in Chicago.

Question: Can you share your best advice for motivating your teams?

Wendy Roach: The best advice on motivating teams comes from my father. "Never ask someone to do something you yourself wouldn’t do." I think that you gain a lot more trust, respect and buy-in when the team knows that you clearly understand the job that they do or are requesting them to do. This traditionally has been a big motivator for the teams that I have worked with because they know that I get it.

Q: What's the best thing you've read lately?

WR: As a life-long learner, I’m always looking for good books that allow me to continue to develop and enhance my skills within leadership. My new best read is The Tao of Leadership by John Heider. The thing I like about this book is there are short, valuable leadership lessons entwined within a one page story. I have even purchased copies for the members of my leadership team. At each leadership meeting, we will read one and discuss how the lesson can be applied within our day to day work with our teams.
