South Nassau CEO joins Healthcare Association of N.Y. board: 5 things to know

Richard Murphy, president and CEO of South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, N.Y., has been elected secretary of the Healthcare Association of New York State Board of Trustees and as a member of the HANYS executive committee.

Here are five things to know about Mr. Murphy.

1. He was elected for a one-year term that began Jan. 1.

2. In his role, he is part of a board responsible for managing the association's activities. The association is the statewide advocate for more than 550 nonprofit and public hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies and other healthcare organizations. 

3. Mr. Murphy has been president and CEO of South Nassau since August 2012. 

4. During his tenure at South Nassau, he spearheaded the hospital's October 2014 acquisition of the former Long Beach (N.Y.) Medical Center, which was shuttered after Hurricane Sandy hit. Under Mr. Murphy's direction, South Nassau has had an array of accomplishments, such as restoring emergency medical services on the barrier island with the August 2015 opening of South Nassau's emergency department at Long Beach, and initiating a $60 million renovation of the hospital's ED at its main campus in Oceanside.

5. Prior to joining South Nassau, Mr. Murphy was president and CEO of Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, N.Y.
