Seattle Children’s Hospital and University of Washington are planning to construct a 184-unit apartment complex for their employees, according to a Seattle Times report.
The project is estimated to cost $40 million. The university is providing the land, and the hospital is providing initial financing with a $6 million, low-interest loan. A Seattle-based developer will build, own and operate the apartments, which will be located in Seattle’s University District.
The hospital and university said the housing will be affordable and close to work for employees’ convenience, according to the report. First-year medical students are also a prime audience for the apartments, since they are not highly-paid but still need to live near the hospital.
Historians have noted the project is one of the first in decades where local employers supply housing for employees.
