Mr. Conyers introduced some version of single-payer legislation every year since 2003 before retiring in December amid allegations of sexual misconduct. The Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act has received 121 Democratic co-sponsors so far.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., sponsor of the Senate’s Medicare-for-all legislation, voiced his support for Mr. Ellison in a March 7 tweet.
“With [Ellison’s] leadership, I know we will be able to take on the greed of health insurance and pharmaceutical companies and finally guarantee healthcare to all,” Mr. Sanders tweeted.
