In November, Providence mailed letters to its nearly 8,500 employees, offering severance packages to those who voluntary leave their posts. Employees who accept the severance package will be offered severance pay and cash bonuses.
A Providence official said most of the 172 employees who accepted voluntary layoffs come from Sacred Heart Medical Center and Holy Family Hospital.
