Planned Parenthood removed its first physician leader in decades, Leana Wen, MD, after less than a year in the role, according to The New York Times.

The sudden removal came amid disagreement between Dr. Wen and Planned Parenthood’s board of directors. Dr. Wen said in a Twitter post July 16 her ouster had been decided at a “secret meeting,” despite “good faith negotiations about my departure based on philosophical differences over the direction and future of Planned Parenthood.” Planned Parenthood disputed her claim about a secret meeting.

Four people familiar with the matter told The New York Times the organization’s board of directors felt a more aggressive stance was needed to address current moves to roll back abortion access. Dr. Wen said she thought “the best way to protect abortion care is to be clear that it is not a political issue but a healthcare one, and that we can expand support for reproductive rights,” according to the report.

Alexis McGill Johnson, co-founder of antibias research group the Perception Institute, will temporarily replace Dr. Wen.
