The complaint to the state Department of Health accuses MHA, which became the operator of the for-profit entity last year, of implementing staffing changes that endanger patients and staff, according to the report.

Among their complaints, New Jersey Appleseed, a public interest law group, and leaders from the Health Professionals and Allied Employees union allege the hospital owners laid off 15-20 percent of pre-sale union employees and poorly manage nursing staff, according to the report. MHA has refuted the claims, arguing it has actually increased staff.

State officials launched an investigation in response to the complaint last month. Results from that investigation are not yet available.
