Oliver Sacks, neurologist and author, dies at 82

Oliver Sacks, MD, a neurologist and best-selling author, died Aug. 30 of cancer, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Dr. Sacks was 82.

After his upbringing in London, Dr. Sacks earned his medical degree from Oxford University. He had lived in New York City since 1965.

Throughout his life, Dr. Sacks served as a professor at various New York City-based academic medical centers, including Columbia University Medical Center and the New York University School of Medicine.

Dr. Sacks was known for his research and writing on patients with neurological syndromes such as amnesia, autism and Tourette’s syndrome.

His books include Awakenings, which was the basis for the 1990 film of the same name, and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.
