Nov. 12-18: National nurse practitioner week

This week is officially National Nurse Practitioner Week, celebrating the roughly 234,000 nurse practitioners across the country.

Nurse practitioners have been providing care for more than 50 years, with more than 1 billion visits made to nurse practitioners each year. All 50 states and the District of Columbia authorize nurse practitioners to prescribe medications and other treatments, while 22 states and the District of Columbia have granted nurse practitioners full authority.

Nearly 23,000 nurse practitioners completed their studies in 2015-2016, and 97.7 percent of nurse practitioners hold graduate degrees.
