North Alabama Regional Hospital set to close later this year

The Alabama Department of Mental Health administration announced that NorthAlabamaRegionalHospital in Decatur, a state-run mental hospital with nearly 150 employees, is scheduled to close later in 2015, according to a WAFF report.

June 30 is the projected closure date, although it could happen sooner, depending on how fast patients transition out of the hospital, according to the report.

Patients "will transition out into the community leading up to the closure date" and "will receive care through community mental health centers in the counties where they end up," the report reads. There is a plan to transfer the employees to other facilities, according to the report.

Decatur Mayor Don Kyle told WAFF that the closing was part of the state's long-range plan.
