New York’s Nassau County replaces hospital board chair

Matthew Bruderman has been replaced as board chair of East Meadow, N.Y.-based Nassau University Medical Center, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman confirmed in a statement shared with Becker’s.

“We thank Matt Bruderman for his service as chairman of the board of Nassau University Medical Center,” Mr. Blakeman said. “Under his leadership, NUMC was able to reduce its deficits by significant margins and improve its ratings. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Mr. Bruderman’s board term was set to expire in February 2027.

In the April 30 statement, Mr. Blakeman also confirmed that Kamal Nayyar, MD, has resigned as a board member, and Irina Gelman, PhD, DPM, Nassau County commissioner of health, was appointed board chair. 

“I appreciate Dr. Kamal Nayyar’s resignation as a member of the board, as it will give me the opportunity to appoint commissioner of health Dr. Irina Gelman, a healthcare professional who has demonstrated throughout the course of her career, the highest level of professionalism and is uniquely qualified person to lead the NUMC Board as a member and chair,” Mr. Blakeman said. “I am totally confident in her abilities and believe under her leadership that she will be a tremendous asset to NUMC, its patients and staff.”

The board moves come as NUMC leaders are suing the state for $1 billion, alleging it unlawfully withheld Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital funds, according to Newsday.

Additionally, hospital executives have filed a lawsuit seeking to strip the Nassau Interim Finance Authority of its control over NUMC finances, the publication reported.

NUMC is a public safety-net hospital.
