Dennis Charney, MD, is stepping down June 30 from his role as dean of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, according to a Mount Sinai Health System news release.
Dr. Charney, an expert in neurobiology who has made “fundamental contributions to the understanding of human anxiety, fear, depression and resilience,” has served as dean for 18 years and is one of the longest-serving deans in any medical school nationwide, the release said. He will remain a member of the faculty at the school and continue researching and teaching.
Eric Nestler, MD, PhD, an expert on the molecular mechanisms of drug addiction and depression, was named interim dean. He has served as dean for academic affairs of the Icahn School of Medicine and chief scientific officer of the health system since 2016.
