The health system’s plans are opposed by St. Joseph Mercy Health System, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., which operates two hospitals that already serve the Canton area. A St. Joseph representative said the market already has an “overcapacity of medical resources,” according to the report.

The four-hospital Oakwood has operated a surgery center in Canton for 30 years.
