Ms. Mayhew served as commissioner between 2011 and May 2017, and was a close ally of Gov. Paul LePage (R). She did not waste any time in voicing a different view from her potential opponent Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who has said she is considering a gubernatorial run. Ms. Mayhew made it clear that she does not support Medicaid expansion for Maine, while Ms. Collins said she would consider it during a recent New York Times interview.

Ms. Mayhew is the seventh candidate to enter the race, which will be held in November 2018.
