The bill, which Maryland’s senators unanimously approved, would require all UMMS board members to step down and reapply for their positions if they want to return. The legislation would also require stringent financial disclosures and would bar no-bid contracts for board members, according to The Baltimore Sun.
The bill now heads to Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan for consideration.
The bill was introduced after reports that nine of UMMS’ 30 board members benefitted from business deals with the health system, including a book deal with Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh.
Ms. Pugh has taken a leave of absence as mayor and resigned from UMMS’ board. On April 8, the entire Baltimore City Council called on Ms. Pugh to resign as mayor, according to the report.
