Latest Transform Hospital Operations Summit points to capacity optimization as an imperative

As healthcare organizations continue to work through backlogs of deferred patient care, and many still operate on reduced staff, hours, and available assets, optimizing capacity is more critical than ever.

On December 7-8 2021, healthcare operations analytics leader LeanTaaS created a forum to discuss real-world success stories and best practices.

The second Transform Hospital Operations Summit brought together over 4,500 participants, representing over 1,000 hospitals and 300 health systems, to learn about the latest deployments of predictive and prescriptive analytics and technology to open healthcare capacity and drive operational excellence.

Speakers included both technology experts and healthcare leaders. One of the plenary speakers was former FDA commissioner, author, and leading healthcare expert Dr. Scott Gottlieb, who discussed the challenges the industry faces moving forward from COVID-19 and into the 2020s, as well as opportunities driven by the innovations that providers quickly implemented during the pandemic. LeanTaaS founder and CEO Mohan Giridharadas expanded on this by outlining the mathematical principles underlying asset optimization, which must be fully addressed before any progress can be made.

Health system leaders then shared their experiences addressing those principles in the larger environment Dr. Gottlieb described. Many cited a growing need to expand capacity without building or buying more assets. Angela Yochem, EVP & Chief Transformation and Digital Officer of Novant Health, discussed her system’s total innovation of its strategic approach; Lisa Stump, Chief Information Officer & SVP of Yale New Haven Health, described the process of scaling AI technology across her organization; and Dr. Robert Groves, EVP & Chief Medical Officer of Banner | Aetna, expanded on its operational and change management principles. These featured sessions are all available on-demand.

Many other sessions highlighted the day-to-day approach from decision makers on the ground. These included perspectives from perioperative, infusion, and inpatient settings. Leaders voiced a common need for a higher level of data to support impactful decisions and actions. Analytics provided by EHRs only offer insights into where capacity problems were occurring, not visibility on foreseeing or solving those problems prescriptively. To be fully able to better utilize their capacity, providers need predictive and prescriptive analytics. In their sessions, leaders described how they applied these to address their unique operational challenges.

These Transform sessions explore the process of implementation, the use cases, and the resulting improvements in care capacity utilization, patient volume, and operational excellence that providers were able to achieve, including:

  • McLaren Health gaining a 15% increase in staffed room utilization in their OR
  • Nebraska Medicine growing infusion patient volume while keeping wait times under 10 minutes
  • UCHealth reducing ICU transfer time by 37%

While the event has been completed, the conversation is far from over. The insights and examples will continue to be relevant in the decade ahead. To view the recording of any Transform session or sort by track of interest, visit the event site.
