Shlomit Schaal, MD, PhD, executive vice president and chief physician executive of Houston Methodist and president and CEO of the Houston Methodist Physician Organization, has been named Press Ganey’s HX26 Physician of the Year.
The award recognizes medical professionals advancing clinician well-being, leadership and patient-centered care, according to a Feb. 3 Houston Methodist news release. Dr. Schaal accepted the award at Press Ganey’s HX26 Conference, held Feb. 2-4 in Orlando, Fla.
“Dr. Schaal’s work to strengthen physician well-being and bring joy back to the practice of medicine has had a real and lasting impact, not only within Houston Methodist but also across the medical community,” Marc Boom, MD, president and CEO of Houston Methodist, said in a LinkedIn post.
Dr. Schaal is a clinician-scientist specializing in vitreo-retinal disease and surgery. Houston Methodist said she played a key role in creating the Joy in Medicine Initiative, a physician-led effort designed to enhance professional fulfillment by gathering clinician feedback and translating front-line insights into systemwide improvements.
Houston Methodist is an eight-hospital system that includes a flagship academic medical center and seven community hospitals across the Houston area, according to its website. The system also operates an employed physician organization with more than 1,800 clinicians.
