The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote the week of Nov. 26 on a bill that would direct HHS to form a public-private partnership of health plans, government agencies, law enforcement agencies and anti-fraud organizations with the goal of rooting out fraud, waste and abuse in healthcare.
Sponsored by Reps. Greg Walden, R-Ore., and Frank Pallone, D-N.J., the bill would require the HHS secretary to choose the partners and a third party to manage the partnership. The third-party organization would provide partners with technical and operational support, promote data-sharing, provide analyses to identify trends and vulnerabilities, and convene at least once a year to update partners on progress.
The bill also directs HHS to submit a report to Congress within two years on the possibility of creating a tool to provide real-time data on ongoing and emergent trends in healthcare fraud, waste and abuse.
