Hospitals Across the Eastern Seaboard Ready for Hurricane Irene

Hospitals across the Eastern Seaboard are readying for Hurricane Irene, which is set to hit the coast over the weekend.

A number of hospitals have planned closures preparation for the storm. Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven, N.C., will close at 5 p.m. tonight and will remain closed until the storm passes, according to a WCTI12 report. Patients will be relocated to Beaufort County Medical Center in Washington, N.C., which is a four-hour drive from the hospital. Hospital officials will notify emergency management workers when the hospital is able to resume operations.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Cape Fear Hospital, both in Wilmington, N.C., and Pender Memorial Hospital in Burgaw, N.C., will go on lockdown beginning at 6 p.m. tonight, according to a WECT News report. No visitors will be permitted, and elective surgeries scheduled for tomorrow have been cancelled.

In New York City, hospitals in low-lying areas — Staten Island University Hospital, Coney Island Hospital and three others — were ordered to evacuate by city officials, according to a Staten Island Real-Time News report. The hospitals were told to complete the evacuations by 8 p.m.

In Massachusetts, Nantucket (Mass.) Cottage Hospital has implemented its emergency preparedness plan, but plans to stay open and available for urgent and emergency medical care, according to an Inquirer and Mirror report.
