South Texas Surgical Hospital is a 63,000-square-foot surgical hospital that contains five operating rooms and 33 inpatient beds, as well as a range of multi-specialty surgical care. NSH operates the hospital in partnership with 55 area physicians. Commenting on the opening of South Texas Surgical, Mr. Rex-Waller said, “Like all of our surgical hospitals, South Texas offers a specialized approach to quality healthcare, playing an important role in the continuum of surgical care.
“We think our ability to offer expanded healthcare choices to consumers in South Texas will bring greater cost efficiency and convenience to the area while creating increased practice efficiencies for the surgeons who utilize our facility,” he said.
Mr. Rex-Waller has historically been a staunch advocate of specialty hospitals, saying that healthcare systems that don’t recognize the need for specialty and surgical hospitals are “dinosaurs courting extinction.” In a 2008 debate with Nick Wolter, CEO of The Billings Clinic in Billings, Mont., at HFMA’s 2008 ANI: The Healthcare Finance Conference, he said physicians often favor specialty hospitals because the facilities prioritize their needs and address their concerns. “If physicians were listened to and brought into governance process, and not marginalized, they would not need specialty hospitals,” he said.
Prior to joining NSH, Mr. Rex-Waller served as CFO of Hawk Medical Supply, a provider of disposable medical supplies to physicians. He also worked as CFO and cofounder of National Surgery Centers, one of the largest independent owner and operator of surgery centers in the country.
Mr. Rex-Waller holds an MBA from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining the healthcare industry, he worked as an investment banker.
