HHS, tribal leaders meet to craft improvement plan for Indian Health Services

HHS Acting Deputy Secretary Mary Wakefield, PhD, RN, and U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) met with tribal leaders in Grand Forks, N.D., to discuss the challenges facing Indian Health Services, theGrand Forks HeraldGrand Forks Herald reported.

At the meeting, Dr. Wakefield outlined a plan to improve access to healthcare and management within IHS, according to the report. The plan focuses on first addressing immediate problems, such as long wait times at emergency rooms, Medicaid and Medicare sign up challenges, the need for more healthcare providers and for youth drug and alcohol addiction programs, according to the report.

About one dozen tribal leaders offered their insight, representing the Spirit Lake Nation, the Turtle Mount Band of Chippewa, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate and the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara, according to the report.
