Dr. Plante was 84 years old.
In addition to lobbying for the National Kidney Foundation, he also advocated for the United Network for Organ Sharing and what is now known as the American Society of Transplantation. He retired in 1997.
Dr. Plante is best known for his work with the 1972 End-Stage Renal Disease legislation, which gave kidney disease patients Medicare coverage for dialysis treatment.
