Non-Profit Healthcare Sector Sees 11% Decline in Charitable Fundraising

Charitable donations to U.S. not-for-profit healthcare facilities fell by 11 percent in fiscal year 2009, a $944 million decline, according to a report by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.

Here are five key statistics:
1. Fundraising efforts in FY 2009 yielded $7.644 billion, compared with $8.588 billion in FY 2008.
2. The drop followed a six-year increase in contributions.
3. The median value of funds, including pledges, compared with each dollar expended for all types of healthcare institutions, was $3.19 — a decline from years past, and well below the high of FY 2004 of $4.22.
4. Academic institutions produced the highest return.
5. The median cost to raise a dollar for all institutions dropped by $0.31 in FY 2009, from $0.34 in FY 2008.
