Healthcare Executives’ Top 5 Patient Safety, Quality Concerns

Most healthcare executives reported that engaging physicians in improving the culture of quality was a major patient safety and quality concern, according to the American College of Healthcare Executives’ survey of top issues confronting hospitals in 2012.

The survey includes responses from 472 healthcare executives who are members of ACHE.

 

The top five patient safety and quality issues that concern healthcare executives are as follows. The percent figure indicates the portion of executives who reported the issue as a concern.  

 

1. Engaging physicians in improving the culture of quality — 69 percent
2. Redesigning care processes — 61 percent
3. Redesigning work environment to reduce errors — 50 percent
4. Pay-for-performance — 47 percent
5. Public reporting of outcomes data — 40 percent
