Government spending bill includes gun measure: 5 things to know

The tentative $1.3 trillion spending bill Congress revealed March 21 includes a measure on gun background checks, according to The Hill.

Here are five things to know about the gun measure.

1. The bipartisan legislation is deemed the Fix National Instant Criminal Background System Act.

2. The measure would strengthen gun background checks for gun purchases by "encourage[ing] states to report more frequently to the current criminal database," according to the report.

3. The legislation does not include universal background checks sought by Democrats, The Washington Post reports.

4. There is, however, reportedly language clarifying that the Dickey Amendment — an annual appropriations rider prohibiting the CDC from using funding to advocate or promote gun control — allows for gun violence research.

5. Lawmakers must pass the spending bill with the gun measure by midnight March 23 to avoid a government shutdown.
