From insurance agent to senator: 4 things to know about Sen. Mike Rounds

Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., has been influential in trying to court Republican votes for the Alexander-Murray healthcare stabilization bill, though he has worked mostly behind the scenes.

Here are four things to know about Mr. Rounds.

1. Mr. Rounds was elected to the Senate in 2015. Before that, he served as the governor of South Dakotafrom 2003-2011 and as a South Dakota State Senator from 1991-2000.

2. Mr. Rounds was as an insurance agent for his family’s real estate and insurance firm, Fischer, Rounds & Associates, before becoming the firm’s CEO.

3.Born in Huron, S.D., Mr. Rounds spent his entire life in South Dakota, earning his bachelor’s degree at Brookings-based South Dakota State University and eventually settling in Pierre.

4. Mr. Rounds sits on five Senate committees: Armed Services; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; Veterans’ Affairs; Senate Committee on Small Business; and Entrepreneurship and Environment and Public Works.
